What Are the Risk Factors of Prostate Cancer?BY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Prostate Cancer | Submitted: 2010-06-06 18:53:58
The accurate cause of prostate cancer is still under research and very difficult to prevent also. On the basis of clinical trial researches have found many risk factors that can develop the chances of prostate cancer in men. Many of the factors are not directly related but may aggravate the possibility to develop prostate cancer. However, if person is well aware with the risk factors of prostate cancer then early consultation with doctor can prevent the development of prostate cancer. Some of the common risk factors of prostate cancer are mentioned below: Race: Prostate cancer is more common in African American men as compare to white men. The reason behind this is not clear but may occur due to socioeconomic and biologic factors. At an earlier age this cancer grows very rapidly in African American men. Some scientists believe that genetic factor is cause of this community or due to fat rich diet which is very common among African American and play a significant role in prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is less common in Latin America, Asia, Africa and most common in North America. Family history: Family history plays a significant role in prostate cancer. Person is more susceptible in developing prostate cancer who has a brother or father with prostate cancer. Scientists have explored particular genes that could be linked with prostate cancer, but still these are under research and have not proved yet. Age is also the risk factor for prostate cancer. With increasing age risk of prostate cancer also increases especially after 50 years. Researched has proved that in men 80% of prostate cancers are detected who are 65 or more. Diet: Scientists also believe that some diet may be the risk factor for prostate cancer. But it is under research and has given no clear cut evidence of direct relationship between nutrition and prostate cancer but many studies suggest there may be an association. Some research says fat rich diet may increase the chances of prostate cancer whereas diet low in fat reduces chance of prostate cancer. It is still not clear that consumption of which nutrients may cause prostate cancer. But diet full of fruits vegetables and legumes decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Cadmium exposure: Research has proved that those who are exposed to cadmium mineral found in alkaline batteries and cigarette smoke are more susceptible to develop prostate cancer. People working in the electroplating or welding occupations are susceptible to cadmium exposure and have greater risk for prostate cancer. Viruses: Researchers have found those xenotropic murine leukemia viruses are found in tissue of some men with prostate cancer. Chances of prostate cancer will increase if men are infected with this type of virus but still more researches are required to get the significance of XMRV in prostate cancer. Vasectomy: It has been suggested that vasectomy may increase the risk for prostate cancer because of the observation that vasectomized men have higher levels of circulating testosterone Hormones and chemoprevention: It is found that prostate cancer is directly proportional to testosterone; if testosterone level is high then development of prostate cancer will be more and vise versa. So advance stage of prostate cancer can be treated with androgen deprivation therapy in which body stop producing testosterone hormone. Some of the drugs are dutasteride and finasteride that reduces the level of testosterone and lowers the chances of prostate cancer. In developing prostate cancer many reports proves that the testosterone an androgenic hormone play a significant role. These studies give idea about relationship between nutrition, hormone with prostate and provide good way of knowing the risk factor of prostate cancer.
