Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer that usually develops in the pleura or peritoneum. The pleural mesothelioma arises in the pleura. As cancer cells multiply, the membranes thicken and put pressure on the lung. It can also occur when fluid builds up between the two parts of the pleura, that is to say, a pleural effusion. The changes undergone by the pleura or pleural fluid can interfere with breathing. The peritoneal mesothelioma originates in the peritoneum and also induces a thickening of membranes. Fluid can collect in the cavity, which has the effect of distending the abdomen.

Your doctor may suspect the presence of mesothelioma after checking your medical history. To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor will perform one or more of the following tests. Imaging Techniques: These techniques allow to carry out a thorough examination of tissues, organs and bones. The X-ray, ultrasound, CT and magnetic resonance imaging are means for your health care team to get a picture of the tumor to see if it has spread. The resulting images may also indicate an abnormal accumulation of fluid or swollen lymph nodes. These tests are usually painless and require no anesthesia.

Blood Tests: Using samples of your blood, it verifies the amount and appearance of different types of blood cells. The results show how your organs function normally and may help to confirm the diagnosis of cancer.

Biopsy: A biopsy is usually required to establish with certainty a diagnosis of cancer. This procedure involves removing cells from the body and examined microscopically. If the cells are cancerous, it will then determine how quickly they multiply. There are several types of biopsies.

Endoscopy:
To diagnose mesothelioma cells of the pleura or peritoneum endoscopy may be performed. Endoscopy allows the doctor to look inside parts of the body using an endoscope. It is a narrow tube and flexible with light and sometimes a tiny camera at its tip.

The diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma may require one of the following endoscopic procedures: Bronchoscopy allows examination of trachea and major airways leading to the lungs using a bronchoscope inserted through the nose or throat to the lungs. You will receive a mild sedative and a local anesthetic to numb your throat. If the doctor observes something unusual, it may take some samples of tissue through the bronchoscope.

Thoracoscopy: In this procedure doctor inserts the endoscope through a small incision in the chest between two ribs. This technique allows to directly inspecting the chest cavity and samples of tissue. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area under consideration, unless thoracoscopy is performed under general anesthesia.

The diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma may require one of the following endoscopic procedures: laparoscopy, the endoscope is inserted through a fine incision in the abdomen. This procedure allows your doctor to look inside the abdomen to examine internal organs and the peritoneum and take samples of tissue. A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area under consideration or it may be that this procedure is performed under general anesthesia. This is sometimes done with a laparotomy, if laparoscopy has not provided sufficient tissue samples. After an incision in the abdomen, the doctor examines the organs within the abdomen and removes samples of tissue. It could happen that the nearby lymph nodes are removed at the same time. Laparotomy is performed under general anesthesia and requires hospitalization for several days after surgery.

It is also possible to perform a biopsy by removing cells from pleural or peritoneal, under local anesthesia. Using a needle, the doctor removes a small amount of fluid or cells in the cavity surrounding the lungs or abdomen. The intervention, which involves taking a sample of fluid between layers of the pleura is known as aspiration If the initial diagnostic tests show that you have mesothelioma, your doctor may want you to have other imaging tests or other tests to see if the cancer has spread.
