Cervical cancer found in the cervical region which cancerous in nature. It is usually detected by vaginal bleeding but many patients don't show any symptoms until cancer reaches the advance stage. Therefore it is compulsory for women to go through Pap smear screening to diagnose any pre-cancerous changes in cervix region and if diagnosed in pre-cancerous stage then it becomes easy to treat and stop development of cervical cancer. In developed countries, statistics show that by performing cervical screening, cervical cancer has reduced to 50% in women.

When comes to treatment part then cervical cancer is treated by performing surgery to the local area (including local excision) in early stages of cancer but in advance stage it is followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Treatment of cervical cancer depends on the disease stage means weather it restricted to local area or spread around the surrounding tissues.

Types of treatment procedures:
Cryosurgery: This procedure is performed when cancer cell is located to local area. In this procedure probe cooled with liquid nitrogen is placed in cervix that kills and freezes the abnormal cells on the cervix. This procedure does not require an anesthesia and kills the outer layer of cells of the cervix.

Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure: This is a very simple procedure for treating cervical cancer and can be performed under local anesthesia. In this procedure electrically charged wire loop is used to excise the outer layer of the cervix where abnormal tissue is present, followed by microscopic examination of that area to confirm absence of cancer cells. In most of the cases it gets cured after one procedure.

Cryosurgery Hysterectomy: This is major surgical procedure in which uterus is removed through the vagina or abdomen. This procedure is performed on relapse case where no more tissue is present to perform LEEP.

Above mentioned treatment procedures are performed on non invasive cervical cancer but in invasive cervical cancer treatment differs and depends upon the tumor growth. Radical hysterectomy is performed when tumor is small and restricted to the cervix, but when tumors extend to surrounding lymph nodes or tissues then intensive therapy is necessary like radiation therapy in addition with chemotherapy drugs.

Radical Hysterectomy: This procedure includes surgical removal of upper portion of the vagina, uterus and the connective tissues and ligaments that supports uterus in place. Pelvic area lymph nodes are also removed in radical hysterectomy as these cancer cells can easily spread through the ligaments that holds the uterus and lymph nodes of the pelvic region.

Radiation Therapy: Radiation Therapy uses strong high energy rays to destroy the cancer cells and stop them from further growing. This is a localized treatment, which only perform locally to destroy cancer cells in specific area. It can be performed through external radiation where radiation comes from large machine or another method by placing implant radiation i.e. placing radioactive materials directly into the cervix. Many patients require both types of radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy: This is the most common therapy used for cervical cancer patient where chemical substance or drugs are used to destroy the cancer cells. This therapy is used when cancer cell spread to the other parts of the body. Chemotherapy may be given by mouth or injection into a vein. A patient may receive combination of drugs or just one drug in cycles.

Biological Therapy: This treatment strengthens the women's immune system by using substance to fight against cancer. Interferon is used in biological therapy for cervical cancer and may be used in addition with chemotherapy. It can be used in those patients where cancer cells have spread from the cervix to other parts of the body.
