With better information and better preparation, many critical situations of an emotional, physical and doctor can be managed more effectively. The following is a list of thyroid tests that your doctor or specialist reference might be considered appropriate: (it is said that all exams will be prescribed for all patients and may not follow the order of the list) Ultrasound Diagnostic Ultrasound - Consideration painless and noninvasive, requires no special patient preparation. It consists of a technique to images with sound waves, which allows to observe the tissue of the thyroid gland, eg.: Smooth, cystic, lumpy, etc.. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy - After a local anesthetic, a needle is introduced into the tumor, in order to take a sample of tissue is then examined under a microscope by a pathologist. The examination is particularly indicated if the biopsy indicates the presence of cancer cells if the tissue sample is benign, the needle may have missed a cancer. Administration of radioactive iodine - Since iodine is present mainly in the thyroid gland, a quantity of radioactive iodine is used for this diagnostic technique. The concentration of iodine in the thyroid gland is an indicator of thyroid function. Important: if a patient has ever had an allergic reaction to iodine or iodine, not be submitted to Amusement. We suggest, therefore, to address this with your doctor or specialist reference. Thallium scintigraphy - Runs after thyroid surgery in order to determine the presence or absence of thyroid tissue extras. This technique does not require discontinuation of medical treatment to the thyroid. Some useful information about radioactive scans: * The technique of scintigraphy consists of a capsule or a liquid containing a radioactive substance, which is followed 24 hours later, the scan itself. * The scan is particularly useful since it allows to analyze the anatomy of the thyroid gland and the location of any nodules. * It is also a technique particularly rapid. * The exam is painless. * The examination is performed in the outpatient setting. If a diagnosis of cancer, may need surgery to remove the thyroid gland. Later, you may also need further scans to detect the presence of any remaining thyroid tissue, which would be treated with radioactive iodine and thyroid hormone by the removal. Removing the thyroid could be any activity of thyroid tissue. The treatment involves administering a high dose of radioactive iodine, the radioactivity which would entirely destroy the thyroid tissue. In preparation for the treatment is interrupted by the time elimination of the thyroid, the patient with progressive hypothyroidism. In conditions of hypothyroidism, the patient should avoid eating foods that contain iodine and developed in greater or lesser extent some of these symptoms. The dose of radioactive iodine treatment described above is much higher than that of scintigraphy, so the patient is hospitalized in isolation until the time when the radioactivity will disappear almost completely. The level of radioactivity will decrease gradually and will therefore be the doctor to advise the patient during this period. The patient should not be surprised of such symptoms. The feeling of being slowly and gradually increase in parallel with the renewed functioning of the thyroid and in a few months you will restore normal physical and mental condition.
