Neuroscientists hopefully recognize that after 20 long years the brain tumor has started to advance by leaps and bounds in the treatment of brain tumors. Neuroscientists have developed to attack the cancer with a genetically engineered virus. These days, neuroscientists are working on glioblastoma multiforme, one of the most aggressive forms if brain tumors. What kind of tumor is Glioblastoma multiforme? It is a very aggressive tumor and most common in the brain. Glioblastoma multiforme is only next to Leukemia when it comes to children affected by cancer. There is surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, but practically glioblastoma multiforme is the most malignant form of tumor from which the survival is minimal. The prognosis has not improved much in recent years. The big improvement is that neurosurgeons have advanced techniques enabling to remove the tumor and this prolongs the life of the patient to 18 months maximum. Why there is a slow progress in the treatment of brain tumors? Neurologists are the least progressed breed of doctors despite not metastasize and is always in the brain. That could facilitate treatment, but has not been the case. What we now know about brain tumors? Let's compare it to a football match. So far, we did not know how to play the match of cancer. Now, with genome analysis, we begin to see who the center forward is. It is the gene which is used to advance cancer and therapies are used in defense form cancer spreading. What is the most important study of brain tumor? Injecting a virus into the tumor is one of the breakthrough steps in treatment of cancer treatment. This virus is genetically manipulated to differentiate a tumor from normal cells. It is a very smart virus designed to eliminate cancer cells only. Nine patients have been tested with this type of treatment of brain tumor and two of them fought tumor. They receive very small doses and yet the results were very positive. Imagine what will happen if the dosage is increased. How optimistic patients can get about treatment of malignant brain tumor? There is no two way in believing that the patients and their family must be cautiously optimistic. Brain tumor is still one of the most dangerous disease known to mankind. Optimism word is most unlikely used with brain tumors. This is because of extremely low rates of survival of brain tumor patients. But on the positive side, the message for the patient with a brain tumor is that there has been advancements by leaps and bounds in the possible treatments of brain tumor. In the past 10 years there has been two successful treatment of brain tumor. While in the previous 20 years there had been not even a single case of treatable brain tumor. This is a new century for the treatment of brain tumor. The progress has been slow but very steady. Genetic engineering is possibly going to play an important role in treatment of this dreadful disease. The genome is the foundation for making anti-cancer targeted therapies. Viral therapies should be combined with other treatments and we will attack the cancer with antibodies and vaccines, which was once unthinkable. The problem with brain tumors is that its severity varies not only according to its composition but the organ which is affected by cancer. Sometimes a benign tumor can be much more dangerous than a malignant one located at an important place like brain. According to results presented at a conference, four new drugs have been effective in the treatment of different types of brain tumors. Although many remain skeptical about these early laboratory tests, but they are really close to obtaining an effective therapy against tumors.
