More and more people are getting cancer these days. The trend is growing and now about 75,000 people each year are affected by cancer. Studies estimate that this value may go as high as 90,000 by the year 2015. Thanks to years of effort and research work done by various Cancer Societies, the quality of cancer research in Europe is of a very high level.

It has been a widespread believe among the community following cancer and its harmful effects, the knowledge about cancer reduces the risk of cancer, enables a better treatment of cancers and enhances quality of life of cancer patients and their families. Since the establishment of societies like KWF Cancer Society in Netherlands in 1949, the survival rate of cancer patients (up to 5 years after diagnosis) has doubled from 25% (in 1949) to 55% (in 2007). In the fight against cancer, research work will remain to be the driver for all future technological developments.

How Cancer Society raises funds to fund cancer research work?
Besides the government, the main source of funds for all cancer research are various hospitals, leading oncologists, contribution form patients and families and also contribution form general population. Although we do not investigate, about 80% of our total expenditure on scientific research, is evenly spread between education and training in the field of cancer research and treatment of cancer. Nearly half of all of all cancer research by universities and other researches are funded by cancer research agencies. Through grants provide by these cancer research agencies, hundreds of scientists are funded and they contribution to the fight against cancer. Currently a agency in Netherlands fund approximately over 350 research projects.

Research by laboratory to hospital
The projects funded by cancer research agencies generally cover the whole area of basic research to be applied for clinical research. Through basic research we will learn how cancer can occur in the body and how cancer can best be addressed. It is important to do basic cancer research as the results from basic research ultimately benefit cancer patients. Therefore, we must stimulate translational and clinical applied research in laboratories which ultimately translates into applications on patients for treatment of cancer.

Research work on CT scans is continuing since years now. CT scan is one tool that is most critical in diagnosis of cancer correctly. More and more funds are put in the research work of CT scan to develop its technology and usage. Special attention is given to the strengthening of research in the fighting against cancer in countries like Indonesia etc. Psychosocial support for cancer patients by developing a research program for elderly patients suffering form is also very helpful.

Advisory
It is important that we explain the large amount of grant applications, choose the best quality research that will contributes the most to the fight against cancer. In order to do this cancer research agencies are assisted by Cancer Scientific Council and its Standing Committees assessment. Each evaluation has its own area of expertise: basic cancer research, translational and applied research, clinical studies or socio-oncology research. With the help of hundreds of multidisciplinary foreign referees the evaluation for selection of the best application is done.

Education and training
Thanks to talented researchers, it is ensured that ensure excellent research and sharing of knowledge is done at various levels. Good educational research is critical to the advancement of cancer research. Several Education scholarships programs are available that motivates good brain to spend time in the research work on cancer. Specialized training courses are also conducted accompanied by conferences or visits by leading oncologists to create awareness in the field of cancer.
