When the cancerous cells develop and form an abnormal mass, it is termed to be a tumor that in later stages gets transformed into cancer. Cancer can develop in any part of the body and spread throughout if not detected and treated at earlier stage. The most common among these types of cancer is the lung cancer. The only cure for the patients of lung cancer is surgery. However, if the small portion is covered with the cancerous mass of cells, the surgeon may perform a wedge resection in order to remove in earlier stage. While, if it gets spread but remains in a single lobe, lobectomy is performed to treat it. On the other hand, if the cancer spreads throughout the lungs and affects it completely, pneumonectomy is applied by the surgeon.

It is often observed that after the surgery, the patients go through an immense pain post-operation. Therefore, there are certain steps that the patients need to follow after their surgery or operation. The patients are transferred to the recovery ward where the hospital staffs try to make your condition stable by making you move a bit within the room so that your body is put to do some activity and avoid numbness. If you do not do so, it may result in blood clotting thereby worsening the post operative effects. The next thing that is done after your surgery is a tube called the chest tube is installed with an IV connection so that your lungs are filled with sufficient amount of air, thereby leading to the outward drainage movement of the fluids that accumulate within it.

After the surgery, the patients may feel the lack of air and hence breathing problems. They may feel that the air is leaking out of the lungs to the chest cavity. As a result of which, the air pressure gets increased within the chest cavity that could also ultimately make the lungs collapse. The presence of the chest tube with an IV connection, thus, serves to be very helpful for the patients during that point of time. The doctors who treat you, along with these practical things would also provide you some medications that will help you to recover from your pain within two to three days. Even if the degree of pain gets reduced still you will find that you are still feeling uncomfortable for few more days or weeks.

There are certain breathing exercises that the patients are required to undergo. This is because the whole respiratory functions are carried out with the help of the lungs and when the lungs are affected, it becomes necessary to put your lungs to work by bit exercises and make it active as it was prior to the surgery. After these active recovery procedures in the hospital, if the doctor is assured that you can recover at home; he may discharge you seeing your overall condition and recovery results. In addition to this, it may also be noted that after the operation, the patients are at great risk of getting infected. This in turn engages all the staffs of the hospital along with the surgeon to undertake some of the activities in order to prevent the patients from being infected.

There is certain other after surgery impact. It may include external or internal bleeding, etc. The recovery time from resection is far less than the time that is required to be recovered from pneumonectomy. The fair chances of the patients to return to their normal routine are within four to eight weeks. Thus, it may be concluded that the patients can only recover if they co-operate with the surgeons and other hospital staffs.
