Risk Factors of Colorectal Cancer

In United States colorectal cancer is most common cancer. Colorectal cancer is found equally in women and men. In US 108,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer in which 50,000 people die from the disease.

Risk factors of colorectal cancer
Approximately 25% of colorectal cancers exist among patient with a family history of colorectal cancer. Those who have more than one parent or sibling are suffering from this disease are at high risk. The chance of colorectal cancer increases if relative was detected with colorectal cancer before 60 years of age. Inherited genetic abnormality may also lead to this cancer in 5 - 10% of patients. With age, colorectal cancer risk also increases and around 90% patients over age 50 are suffering from this disease.

Race: African-Americans are considered as highest risk for colorectal cancer and most of them die from this disease. Jews of Eastern European among Caucasians, have a maximum rate of occurrence of colorectal cancer. American Indians Natives, Latinos, Asian Americans, and have a lesser risk than Caucasians.

Risks for colon rectal cancer increases in developed countries because of lifestyle patterns. A Western lifestyle, including smoking, and having excess weight due to sedentary lifestyle increases the chances of colorectal cancer. Those people who eat non vegetarian foods especially red and processed meats are more susceptible to colorectal cancer. Unlike non vegetarian foods eating vegetables and fruits reduce the risk of cancer. It is under research that whether deficiencies such as folic acid increases the chances of colorectal cancer. Recent report has not shown that consuming folic acid supplements decreases the chances of colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is more common in those people who consume Alcohol and smoke very often. Research has shown that this cancer occurs in young generation because of more consumption of alcohol and cigarette smoking. A sedentary way of living can also aggravate the chances of colorectal cancer therefore in obese patients this is very common especially for men. So with regular exercise and healthy diet can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

Some medical Conditions that activate the chances of Colorectal Cancer are: Inflammatory bowel diseases, Adenomatous Polyps and Diabetes. Inflammatory bowel diseases are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The chance of colorectal cancer increases in those patients who suffer from chronic Inflammatory bowel diseases especially with ulcerative colitis. Those people who had a history of adenomatous polyps have increase risk of developing colorectal cancer. During colorectal screening (colonoscopy) these polyps can be easily detected and can be removed during that time before they become cancerous cell. Colorectal cancer is very closely related to diabetes.

To prevent colorectal, the best way is by engaging yourself in healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and exercising regularly, help in reducing the risk for colorectal cancer. Avoid excess of smoke, and alcohol consumption. Therefore regular colorectal cancer screenings become very necessary to detect the cancer. Researches are going on to bring out the positive result to protect colorectal cancer. Some of these include age of us Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs. NSAIDs are drugs that relieve pain quickly. They include naproxen (Aleve), and the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib, aspirin, ibuprofen. Research has proved that NSAIDs reduces colorectal cancer risk. But continuous use of NSAIDS may result in risk of stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding. In fact long term use is very dangerous and may cause heart attack and stroke, in those who have a history of heart disease. Research has also shown the good result of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and decreases the risk of colorectal cancer in postmenopausal women. HRT can increase the possibility of uterine and breast cancer and even blood clots. But still these treatments help a lot in relieving symptoms of colorectal cancer.
