Preventive Measures For Skin CancerBY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Melanoma and Skin Cancer | Submitted: 2010-06-26 01:33:00
Melanomas can occur at any age and usually present a dark stain. They are rather rare, but they are among the cancers that can grow rapidly and metastasize. They are responsible for 75% of deaths from skin cancer. Fortunately, if detected early, they can be successfully treated. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. Nearly 90% of skin cancers could be prevented by simply protecting the skin against ultraviolet rays. Protection from ultraviolet Protect skin from the sun by wearing long sleeved shirts, pants and a hat with wide brim. Polyester move leaves less ultraviolet light than the cotton. Wear sporting goods called UV-resistant clothing, specially designed to provide maximum protection against the sun. They are made of special microfibers, have tighter weave, etc. Their use can be justified in the case of people who spend several hours each day in the outdoors, and in the case of people who have an illness that makes the skin very sensitive to UV like albinism and porphyria. Find the shade and avoid sun exposure without protection, especially when the sun is at its peak. This precaution also applies when the weather is cloudy, because the sun's rays pass through thin layers of clouds. Before you go out or spend part of the day outdoors, check with the weather service to determine the UV index. About Sunscreens Dermatologists usually recommend application of sunscreen which has protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 over the uncovered areas of skin. The SPF indicates protection against UVB rays only. For maximum protection, look for sunscreens that also protect against UVA rays. It is recommended to apply sunscreen of 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure, the time that the chemical ingredients are absorbed through the skin. Some creams contain titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which protect the skin immediately upon application. Sunscreens protect the skin more efficiently than the gel and spray. The gels adhere less well to the skin than creams, they therefore less resistant to perspiration and water. Sunscreens should be used in fairly large quantities. An average person who wants to smear his body will apply the equivalent of at least 30 ml screen. In addition, there should be on the face about 5 ml. Do not forget to reapply sunscreen every two or three hours after swimming or if much has transpired. In general, people do not apply enough cream. Avoid using oily products that accelerate the tanning even those containing sunscreens. Skip to frequent tanning salons. Vitamin D A minimum of direct exposure of skin to sunlight is necessary, particularly to dispose of adequate sources of vitamin D. This vitamin is vital for healthy bones and teeth. It is synthesized by the skin under the action of ultraviolet rays of the sun. However, it is estimated that to expose a few minutes per day in the sun provides 80% to 90% of the vitamin D required. If skin cancer is detected early, then treatment becomes easier. Consult a doctor promptly if you notice any of the following signs: Mole or actinic keratosis that changes shape, size or color: Actinic keratoses are small, flat lesions, rough, flesh-colored or pink. They appear mostly on the face, arms and hands of people who are often exposed to sunlight. They can turn into squamous cell carcinoma. Watch out for bump on or beneath the skin, skin lesion that does not heal. Some herbal remedies and some essential oils containing furocoumarins also have a photosensitizing effect. Both in the case of medicines in the case of natural health products, the magnitude of the effect depend on the photosensitizer dose. Check with a pharmacist, a doctor or other health professional trained to eat before a new drug or a new natural health product.
