Colon cancer is one of the most fatal forms of all disease known to mankind. People who have witnessed or experienced the wrath of colon cancer will know why we use the word fatal to describe this disease. The worst factor of colon cancer is its possibility to grow malignant after getting cure once. Colon cancer has a very high rate of becoming malignant after few years of treatment. If we will believe the records almost 15% percent of all cases of colon cancer have resurfaced back to malignancy within 5 years of treatment.

We will try to understand why colon cancer is so fatal with such high percentages of recurrence. Colon cancer is a disease that attacks the walls of the colon in the abdominal region. Abdomen area being the prime are where all the digestive actions of body takes place, any malfunctioning there affects the total body. Development of colon cancer develops tumors on the walls of the abdomen / colon. Tumors are nothing but an abnormal mass of tissue growth in the abdominal walls. Tumors are result of unjustified cell division within the body causing formation of lumps. Formation of tumors effect proper functioning of colon.

Function of colon is extremely vital in the digestive process of human body. Without colon the total process of digestion and excretion will come to a halt causing extreme health hazards. Function of colon includes absorption of minerals and water and formation of feces. Whenever we consume any food in our body, a part of the foods nutrition is consumed for cell growth but a majority part of it is thrown out form the body in the form of feces. Colon also helps in water storage in the body. Indirectly the functioning of colon is prevention of spread of harmful bacteria in the body. Formation of feces and its expulsions helps spread of any harmful bacteria within the body. Colon also manages the pH level of the body which is very important in the functioning of the digestive system.

Recurrence of colon cancer is like a jolt in the neck for the patient and the family. It is very hard for the family to face the wrath of this disease years after years with fear of facing few more in the years to come. Records state that colon cancer has chances of recurrence ranging form 15% to 65%. This is the reason why doctors call colon cancer as fatal. Though this disease is treatable (to an extent) but it never leaves the patient in totality. But with the emergence of advanced gene therapy, medical researches have found ways to predict the recurrence of colon cancer after treatment. A genetic test is carried on the patients and doctors forecast the frequency of recurrence in patient. This technology has come as a life savior for all colon cancer patients. At least by approximately knowing the time of recurrence, patients and family may get themselves mentally prepared and plan the proceedings.

Generally all cancer treatment is done by using the process of chemotherapy. But not all tumors can be removed/ dissolved by chemical action. The more there is a delay in cancer detection the harder it becomes to treat the cancer by chemotherapy. In absence of chemotherapy surgery is the other option of treatment of cancer. But doctors generally try to avoid surgery in cancer. But in case the genetic test says that recurrence of colon cancer will be very frequent after treatment then doctors may go for surgery.

There is little doubt that genetic test and their results have helped in early detection of colon cancer and making it easily treatable.
