Possible Surgical Treatment of Skin Cancer (Melanoma)BY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Other | Submitted: 2010-07-08 19:43:39
Introduction This article on melanoma (skin cancer) will gives you general information about the diagnosis and treatment and possible causes of melanoma. Melanoma is possible one of the most common forms of cancer among people with white skin. You should realize that the situation for everyone may differ from the information below. A melanoma is one of the three most common types of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma and adjacent to the relatively less aggressive basal cell carcinoma. Since melanoma is the most well known and much attention is paid to the media, the melanoma is often popularly referred to as "skin cancer". What is a melanoma A melanoma is a malignant tumor that usually arises from an initially benign brown birthmark. Almost everyone has one or more moles, called "nevus". Moles themselves are not disturbing and relatively rarely give rise to the development of melanoma. However, if growth activity is too fast then it is recommended to consult a physician and do a proper diagnostic evaluation. Incidence Melanoma skin cancer is quite easily spread to other parts of the body. In recent decades, we see a significant increase in the number of new melanoma patients every year. In the year 2005, over 2500 new patients were found to have melanoma and are expected to increase to a possible over 3000 patients in next 5 years. Because melanomas in most cases are detected in a relatively early stage, through increased awareness among the population and general practitioners, the mortality rate is getting lower year after year. Prognosis Melanomas behave quite aggressive in the sense that they can easily spread. The probability of the existence of metastasis is closely related to the thickness of the melanoma growth inside the depth of the skin. This growth of thickness is expressed by the method of Breslow thickness in millimeters. In the case of thin melanomas (less than 1.5 mm Breslow thickness) there is a 90% probability of survival of patient for more than 10-year. As a melanoma becomes thicker (more than 3 mm), the risks of life also increases. The survival rate falls sharply down to 40% probability of of survival of patient for more than 10-year. What are the possible causes of Melanoma Frequent and excessive exposure to sunlight (UV radiation) may cause melanoma. Generally in Asia & Africa the intensity of sun is so strong that lack of protection form UV rays leads to this heinous disease. Excessive UV radiation exposure is also possible in sea beaches, near swimming pools. People generally spend long time under sun in these places, and as they are in constant contact with water, protection form UV radiation becomes more important. UV Radiations is also one of the main reasons for the development of melanomas among children and babies especially with a white skin. When a child plays in the sun and that too unprotected form UV radiation, often there is a huge sun-burn (especially on the beach!). The effect of this UV radiation sun burn appear later in life. Later in life such exposure to harmful sun radiations increases the risk of developing a melanoma. Specialists have indicated that there is a specific time zone during which the harmful affects of UV radiations is most strong and this in between 12.00 and 15.00 hr. During this time zone if some body decides to venture out in the sun for work or for holidays and fun, they must wear wearing protective clothing like hats and must apply protective lotions with high protection very useful as preventive measures. What are the signs / symptoms which should be noted and observed for Melanoma Itching, Deformation, Increase in size, Strong darkening, Bleeding, Ulceration. The emergence of a new mole "whether or not accompanied by a combination of the above complaints Article Source: http://www.cancer-surgery.com/ About Author / Additional Info: I am not a cancer doctor.
