Possibility of Treatment of LeukemiaBY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Leukemia | Submitted: 2010-06-06 18:39:44
By definition leukemia is a disease that causes white blood cells to multiply rapidly in the human body. In simple terms we can understand leukemia as a cancer of blood or more specifically of bone marrow. In lay man terms we can understand that bone marrow is the center in human body where formation of new blood cells takes place. When bone marrow starts producing excess quantities of white blood cells, human blood begins to dysfunction and we call this disease as leukemia. Stem cells are present in the bone marrow which produces blood cells. Leukemia attacks the stem cells which in turn starts producing white blood cells. The presence of abnormal number of white blood cells also called as leukemia cells affects the functioning of other normal blood cells. These extra white blood cells overcrowd the blood and result in damaged DNA. In a normal human being the life of white blood cells are very short. White blood cells generated by stem cells in bone marrow dies off soon allowing other fresh cells to take its place. Fresh white blood cells are very important in the development of the defense system of human body. But continued accumulation of bad white blood cells not only takes up space but also affects the defense system of humans. In advanced stages of leukemia, formation of white blood cells is so intense that under electronic microscope it looks a never ending chain reaction. The inner cross-section of human bone consists of bone marrow. It is here that the production of white blood cells, red blood cells and blood platelets takes place. Technically white blood cells are also called as leucocytes. The function of leucocytes is to fight the harmful bacteria's and viruses causing infections in human body. This is the reason why we also know white blood cells as the builder of human body's defense system. Due to presence of extra non-effective white blood cells in the body, the defense system is severely affected without repair. This is the reason why leukemia (blood cancer) is considered as the worst form of cancer. The environment in which we breathe and live, the air is filled with immense forms of viruses, some malignant and some immune. But majority when strikes human body may prove lethal in absence of a strong defense system. Abnormal quantity of white blood cells reduces the fighting ability of human body against harmful viruses present in atmosphere. Due to presence of abnormal white blood cells and the extra space they occupy, the functioning of not only white blood cells are affected but also it affects red blood cells. Red blood cells are carriers of oxygen to human cells and tissues. As production of fresh red blood cells is affected by leukemia, hence oxygen retention in body decreases causing severe side effects. Even blood platelet which is responsible for blood clotting in case of injury is also affected. Though there has been tremendous development in the field of medicine in the past few decades but treatment of leukemia is still a grave area for medical fraternity. Modern medicine and advanced technology do not know how to treat leukemia. They do not know how to rectify the formation of abnormal numbers of white blood cells in bone marrow. Though there has been few off hand examples of survivors of leukemia but this was only possible because the disease got detected in a very advanced stage. But doctors even find it hard to confirm that early detection of leukemia will mean certain treatment and cure. Different patient responds differently to the various treatments of leukemia. It is almost impossible to cure leukemia completely, but early detection may help in prolonging the bad effects of leukemia.
