The collective expertise that the National Institute of Health and Medical Research has made public is instructive in more ways than one. Devoted to the relationship between cancer and environment, it attempts to separate myth from reality and possibility.

The number of cancer cases is increasing in Europe?
Yes. In 2005 there were nearly 320,000 new cases of cancer: 180,000 men and 140,000 among women. Since 1980, the number of new cancer cases a year compared to the population continues to increase: +35% in men and 43% in women. This is particularly disturbing because this increase is evaluated without taking into account the effect of two factors: increasing population, and the aging. Population and ageing, leads to increased chances of cancer occurrence among human beings.

Is there any role of environmental factors in cancer?
It's very difficult to estimate with precision, indeed, the impact of an environmental factor depends both on its link (more or less clear) with a particular cancer and prevalence of exposure to the general population. Thus an environmental factor will be low, however, a high impact if it is very widespread on the general population. Conversely, a carcinogenic factor will have little impact if few people are exposed. The evaluation of its impact is more difficult to grasp because scientists lack access to reliable data.

Environmental factors are more dominant for which cancer?
The National Institute of Health and Medical Research have studied a total of nine cancers: breast, thyroid, testis, ovary, prostate, lung, mesothelioma (asbestos-related), hematological malignancies and brain tumors. The last collective expertise of INSERM, which dates back to 2005, did in fact show a particularly strong increase in the incidence of these cancers.

Mesothelioma - The impact of inhaling asbestos dust is very clear and no longer suffers from controversy close to 1,000 additional cases in 2005, an increase of 5% per annum between 1980 and 1995 and lowest (due to a lower exposure for cohorts born after 1930).

Testicular Cancer - have sees a dramatic increase in the number of cases form 1980 to 2005 at an aggressive rate of 2.5%. Increase in testicular cancer has been found in almost all countries across the world but Europe has been more badly hit. Researches have shown that probably the environmental factors are leading to increased speed of occurrence of testicular cancer.

Hematological malignancies - cases are seen at a rate of more than 10,000 new cases per year. Strong and steady increase between 1980 and 2000, then slow down. The causes are still not properly understood by scientists hence not explained.

Prostate cancer - sees more that 60,000 new cases per year. Prostrate cancer on its own accounts for 70% of the overall increase in cancer in humans. However, this increase was primarily due to the progress of screening material, including the determination of specific antigen (PSA).

What is the possible cause of cancer in human beings?
Among the substances classified as carcinogenic, we find, among other (non-exhaustive list): Increased exposure to Ionizing radiation like X-rays leads lung cancers, blood disorders, brain tumors, breast cancer and thyroid cancer. Asbestos is the major cause of mesothelioma and lung cancer. Pesticides are also carcinogenic and lead to cancers like lung cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer etc. Passive smoking is blamed for hematological and brain tumors in children.

If X-rays are harmful, should we restrict the use of X-rays?
Approximately 250,000 people in Europe are under surveillance because of regular exposure to X-rays. These are people who are working in industries like nuclear industry, radiologists, technicians etc. The study will finally lead to this conclusion. Till today the use of X-ray in medicine is prevalent.
