Multiple Surgery Options For Breast CancerBY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Cancer Surgery | Submitted: 2010-06-13 10:48:34
Surgery has come up as one of the most effective measures to treat different forms of cancer. This article will help you to understand the multiple perspectives of varied forms of breast cancer surgery that is most common among the women. Three major types of surgeries that are common to treat breast cancer among the patients. These surgeries are breast sparing surgery followed a radiation therapy, mastectomy and mastectomy along with the reconstruction surgery. Different attributes of these three kinds of surgeries have been mentioned as follows: The first one is the breast-sparing surgery. In this case, your doctor will only remove your cancer and the tissues surrounding that area. It has been observed that after this surgery, there is no change that appears on the appearance of the breast; indeed it keeps your breast intact as it remains prior to the surgery. There are various names that have been given to this form of surgery like lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, breast-conserving surgery, or segmental mastectomy. However, the radiation therapy is considered to be really significant after this surgery. This is because this therapy would keep the women stay away from the reappearance of the breast cancer. In fact, many cases after the surgery demand for the chemotherapy and also hormone therapy. The second one as mentioned above is mastectomy. If you go for this type of surgery, the doctor will remove your breast and the nipple completely. After the surgery, most women need chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy and even all of them. Several forms of mastectomy have come into focus that include total, modified radical and double mastectomy. In case of total mastectomy, the surgeon removes your entire breast. However, the doctors are even found to take out some of the lymph nodes that are present under the arm. Whereas in case of the modified radical mastectomy, along with the above two things that is your breast and under the arm lymph nodes, the surgeon also removes the lining over your chest muscles and may be a small part of the chest muscle. While, as far as the double mastectomy is concerned, the doctor removes both your breasts even if you do not possess cancer in the other one. It is mostly opted in cases where the doctors have a doubt about you getting affected by it even in the other breast. The third and the last one is the breast reconstruction surgery. This is the option that you may choose after going through mastectomy. The reconstructive plastic surgeon does this surgery in case of which the patients who lose their breasts during the mastectomy surgery are given a new breast like shape along with the nipples. In fact, your doctor can also add a tattoo that could give an appearance as an areola that constitutes the dark area around your nipple. If you demand for any other transformations in this case, you can let your surgeon know that so that he could perform the process accordingly. There are two types of reconstructive breast cancer surgery. One is the breast implantation in which the surgeon puts an implant that remains under your skin to make up the new breast like shape. This type of reconstruction may cause some problems such as hardness of the breast area, pain and infection. It may also break or move abruptly after some years of surgery. The other one is the tissue flaps procedure or surgery in which the surgeon builds breast shape with the help of muscles, fat or skin taking them from other parts of the body. The patients can opt any of them based on their suitability and preference. Article Source: http://www.cancer-surgery.com/ About Author / Additional Info: I am not a cancer doctor.
