Lymphoma cancer, among all types of cancer, is the most common cancer among Americans. When a patient is diagnosed with this disease called Lymphoma cancer the first reaction of the patients are what this is? And why it is in my body? People hardly has any know how of this medical terminology called Lymphoma.

Cancer of Lymphatic system is called as lymphoma. Lymphatic system is a network of capillaries (like blood veins and arteries) which carries lymph. Lymphatic system plays a very important role in developing defense mechanism of human body. Lymphatic system acts as a filter and removes any organism/ bacteria that may cause a disease. They also produce antibodies which are important for body immune system. Lymphatic system also has important role to play when it comes to tissue management. Excess water and proteins needs to be continuously drained form the tissues to prevent them form swelling. Lymphatic system does this role to perfection. The main function of lymphatic system is to act as a carrier of lymph. Lymph is a milky fluid whose primary content is a particular type of white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphatic system which includes spleen, thymus and various lymph nodes plays a important role in human beings in developing a strong immune system. Lymphatic system unlike blood system carries lymph fluid without need of any pumping system. This is a unique process in human body as acts a defender against toxins and harmful germs. Spleen is the largest lymphoid in the human body.

Lymph fluid present in the capillaries of lymphatic system consists of lymphocytes that fight any foreign matter harmful for human body. Lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells, are produced in bone marrow. After fighting the harmful foreign matters in the body the lymph travels back to the spleen. Spleen acts as a store house of blood and worn out lymphocytes. From spleen the dead cells are brought to the liver where they are chemically broken down and the by-product of this chemical reaction is excreted.

Lymphoma cancer which is a malignant disease starts in the lymphocytes contained in the lymph fluid. Lymphoma cancer can be categorized into two sub categories called Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer. Main symptoms of lymphoma cancer are excessive sweating during sleep, abnormal weight loss, enlarged spleen and high anorexia. Still there is a huge speculation regarding the root cause of malignant cancer in the lymphoma. There is no hard justification and reasoning established till date but doctors experience have traced a common pattern among patients suffering form lymphoma cancer. Lymphoma cancer is nothing but mutation of lymphocytes which collects as small tumors in lymph nodes. Primarily patients who has reached any form of severe immune-compromised status like viral disease like HIV etc, or patient has taken immune-suppressant drugs. Immune suppressant drugs are generally taken by patients who have undergone an organ transplant surgery and undertake this drug so that their immune system shall not reject the new organ. Patients who are already suffering form cancer and are under radiation therapy are also extremely susceptible to lymphoma cancer.

Treatment of Lymphoma cancer has been done very effectively till date by the use of chemotherapy. Patients have been seen to respond positively to the treatment of lymphoma cancer by the use of chemotherapy. Radiation therapy can also be used to treat lymphoma cancer in case the cancer has not spread to the neighboring organs. In a very advanced stage of lymphoma cancer doctors resort to the treatment by bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplant can be considered, as on today, as one of the last resorts available with us for the treatment of lymphoma.
