Liver Cancer is Among the Most Frequently Occuring Cancer in HumansBY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Liver Cancer | Submitted: 2010-08-08 20:13:35
The liver is a major internal organs of our body. Press under the ribs on the right you can almost touch the liver. Its shape is similar to a pyramid and is divided into two lobes, right and left. Unlike many other organs, the liver receives blood from two major vessels: the hepatic artery, which put an oxygen from the lungs, the vein nutrient-rich blood from the gut, the liver performs multiple functions, such as the synthesis of proteins such as albumin, which is essential, inter alias, to regulate and balance the distribution of liquids in various body compartments. In the liver are also processed many of the nutrients absorbed from the intestine and are summarized many of the clotting factors used to stop bleeding. The liver releases bile into the intestine to facilitate absorption of fat and, very importantly, makes it harmless, and turning away many toxins from the body since there are many types of liver cells can develop many tumors, some benign and other malignant , who are thus treated differently. Risk factors Risk factors are many, some controllable, others depend on age or family history of the person affected and can not be altered. If a person recognize various risk factors are more likely to develop cancer. In these persons is recommended tighter control. Liver cancer is more common in men than in women, probably because they are more widespread smoking habits and alcohol abuse. Infections ongoing hepatitis B virus (HBV) and C (HCV) are important risk factors for liver cancer. The areas of the world where these infections are very common, have higher incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma. Although some hereditary diseases of the liver and increases the risk, not instead favoring the infection of hepatitis A. Cirrhosis is represented by replacement of liver tissue with scar tissue and is caused by alcohol abuse or infection with HBV or HCV and iron accumulation in the liver. The link between smoking and liver cancer is known to worsen with time and alcohol abuse as with diabetes and obesity. Chemicals, such as aflatoxins are produced by a fungus that contaminates many cereals (rice, maize, soybeans, etc..) Increased cancer risk, but in Europe and the United States these products are safe before being tested as marketed. Vinyl chloride and Thorotrast (thorium dioxide) are risk factors for children and at the Thorotrast is no longer used and the use of vinyl chloride is under strict control in Europe. Although arsenic must be considered among the risk factors, not in Europe, but in some parts of the world where drinking water is contaminated with this substance. Finally anabolic steroids, male hormones used primarily by athletes to improve physical fitness, and the contraceptive pill may increase the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Clinical studies have shown a link between the pill and cancer. This bond is valid for the pill but at high doses, no longer in use, but is not confirmed for next-generation pills, the HCC is still an extremely rare event in young women. Prevention In general is to reduce exposure to risk factors. In the case of hepatocellular most important risk factors worldwide are infection with HBV and HCV. For hepatitis B vaccination in there very efficient, which are subjected in Europe all children and adults at risk. About 2% of Italians suffer from chronic HBV infection, the 15-40% of patients with chronic hepatitis will develop cirrhosis, liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. In people with chronic infection can be used drugs, such as interferon and ribavirin, to prevent tumor growth. Other drugs such as lamivudine often lead to viral resistance, while entecavir, also active against hepatitis B virus resistant to other drug treatments available for now in an area hospital, indirectly allows a reduction in the incidence of liver cancer.
