Get the Best Way of Treating Leukemia

Among all childhood cancer leukemia is the most common cancers. Leukemia is also known as blood cancer that initiates in the bone marrow. This disease is not restricted to any age but found in all age group but most commonly found in children below 6 years of age. In United States around 3000 children suffer from this disease annually. Females are more susceptible to this disease than males and among races
Caucasians are more common.

Signs and symptoms of leukemia depend of the abnormal cells present in the blood throughout the body. Some of the common symptoms of leukemia patients are: Swollen Lymph Nodes: Lymph nodes are bean-shaped in structures that major function is the filtration of blood. Lymph nodes situated under in the groin, arms, neck and chest become swollen when leukemia cells accumulate in the nodes.

Anemia: Those children who suffer from leukemia lack enough red blood cells to carry oxygen with few platelet counts which causes a condition called anemia. Children with anemia look weak, pale and tired due to low RBC count and have tendency to bruise and bleed easily due to low platelet count.

Recurrent Infections: leukemia a susceptible to recurrent infections though they carry increase amount of white blood cells but all are immature that's why unable to fight against the infection. Repetitive viral or bacterial infections are very common in children. Fever, running nose and cough are the common symptoms of infection.

Bone and Joint Pain: One of the common symptoms of leukemia is joint pain or pain in bones due to overcrowding of bone marrow.

Abdominal pain: In leukemia cancer cells get collected in liver, kidney and spleen that result in the enlargement of the organs therefore abdominal pain occur. Abdominal pain leads to loss of appetite that result in fast weight loss.

Breathlessness: In T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia, leukemia cell get accumulated around the thymus gland and these cells are present in the center of the chest that result in cause pain and breathlessness. Patients may show symptoms like coughing Wheezing or painful breathing and need immediate medical attention.

Treatment of Leukemia
Chemotherapy: In chemotherapy, chemical drugs are used to destroy the cancer cells. Chemotherapy can be taken through systemically or orally according to the severity of the disease. In acute lymphocytic leukemia, intrathecal chemotherapy is used in which chemotherapy drugs is injected through the spine in the cerebrospinal fluid.

Radiation Therapy: In radiation therapy, high-energy rays or X-rays are used to destroy cancer cells and reduce tumors. In acute lymphocytic leukemia external beam radiation therapy is used where radiation comes from an external machine.

Bone Marrow Transplant: Bone Marrow Transplant is one of major treatment of leukemia and usually used in the advance stage of leukemia. It involves high doses of chemotherapy with radiation, to destroy all cancerous cells present in bone marrow. Donor healthy marrow is transplanted into child whose tissue is the same the donor marrow tissue. Usually siblings are considered as best donor like brother or sister. This healthy marrow from a donor is intravenously administered to your child through vein to replace the patient marrow that was killed. This whole procedure involving donor marrow is referred as allogeneic bone marrow transplant. Autologous transplant is another type of bone marrow transplant, in which bone marrow is extracted from leukemia child and treated with chemotherapy drugs to destroy cancer cells.

Biological Therapy: Biological therapy is performed to activate and restore the patient immune system attempts to fight against the cancer. Biological therapy uses substances made in a laboratory or produced by your child's body to boost or restore the defense system against the disease.
