Skin cancer is a type of cancer most common in men and usually found in people with white skin. 80-90% of these cancers are caused by exposure to sunlight. Protecting the skin from UV radiation, sunscreens can prevent skin cancer and are widely recommended by health authorities. In effect, they prevent sunburn by blocking ultraviolet rays burn the skin. There are three types of skin cancer found basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinomas, they are curable, the melanoma skin, cancer of high malignancy.

The melanoma is a malignant skin cancer. It grows by the degeneration of melanocytes, cells that produce the pigment that protects against sun and is responsible for tanning. These cells then create malignancies color usually dark brown or black. Malignant melanoma detected at later stage, that's why it is considered as life threatening. Melanoma is a malignant tumor that develops from melanocytes. These are usually located in the basal layer of the epidermis and part of the system of skin protection against solar radiation. Thus, the color of the skin depends on the amount of pigment produced by each melanocyte. Malignant melanoma is formed when these cells degenerate. Melanoma can develop either from an existing mole or more frequent may appear on the surface of healthy skin anywhere on the body. The basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell are developed from the most superficial cells of the skin. They are favored by solar exposure by chronic inflammatory. They are low grade and are often curable. Their metastasis from the skin is very rare.

Melanoma is treated with surgery. The extension of the lesion in the skin can spread over a period ranging from several months to several years. Then, the spread of melanoma continues deep into the dermis. If the vertical invasion continues, it may in some cases lead to the metastases. The thickness of melanoma is one of the determining factors for successful treatment. When melanoma is less than 1 mm then over 90% of patients are cured by surgical removal permanently. For lesions with a diameter greater than 4 mm, an adjunct to surgery is often necessary.

If melanoma is not detected early then invasive forms of treatment is performed which is less effective and making this cancer one of the most formidable. Once metastases occur, the chances of survival decrease significantly. Skin graft is performed to cover the surgical wound. Along with skin grafting, Interferon alpha complete the surgery. Interferon alpha is injected under the skin three times a week. Side effects of interferon alpha are chills, fever and fatigue. The more advanced forms can be treated with chemotherapy. The basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell are treated with surgery or radiotherapy.

Initially the support of your monitoring will be performed by a specialist of your healthcare team. Your family doctor may eventually take over. The schedule of monitoring visits is different for each person. Visits to the doctor may be more frequent during the first year after treatment and longer intervals thereafter. People who have already had a skin cancer may reappear the disease in the same region or elsewhere on the body. Increase the awareness to check the condition of your skin, know what to look for and examine yourself regularly. Immediately report to your doctor about any skin change, mass, swelling or other symptoms, without waiting for the next appointment.
