If a person has what might be symptoms of cancer, your doctor will order analysis to be performed. From the analysis we can understand if the person actually has cancer. Usually, the analysis shows which part of the body has cancer. There are some commonly used tests to detect cancer. A person with symptoms may be subjected to one or more of these tests.

The visit
If you have an abnormal swelling, the doctor will examine and touch the swelling. If you feel pain, your doctor will examine the painful area. Your doctor may also consider including areas around the swelling that may also be painful.

Blood or urine
Some cancers (eg prostate cancer or ovarian cancer) produce substances that end up in blood or urine. The presence of these substances in blood and urine gives your doctor the information regarding presence of cancer in the body. Your doctor may draw blood using a needle and syringe, or may ask you to bring a urine sample. Blood and urine will be sent to the laboratory for further tests.

X-ray or scanning
CT Scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the kidneys, bladder and urethra (IVP), bone scan, ultrasound are common tests. To perform these tests, equipment are required in the hospital. These equipments produce images that show what is inside the body, eg internal organs and tumors. To produce the images, the device uses a very safe amount of radiation, magnetic fields, radio waves or sound waves.

Before scanning, the person may be asked to drink good amount of liquid, say 2 litres of water or else they will inject a special liquid. This fluid helps to highlight the internal parts of the body. The person will not be allowed to drink or eat a couple of hours before the procedure.

The apparatus for scanning is situated in a special room. If one undergoes a scan, then he/ she will be asked to remove some of the clothing and wear a special gown. The person operating the equipment will show you exactly where to unwind. The machine moves around the patient or over while producing images. It is possible that the space inside the equipment is restricted. If you fear being in a confined space, tell the person operating the equipment. Try to relax by closing his eyes. Sometimes equipment may be noisy.

Usually these tests are performed in hospital or clinics. Some take about five minutes, others may take longer. It is normal for a person who is undergoing a scan to get a bit worried. But remember that scanning is not harmful and does not make you sick

Analysis of visual observation

Tests like Cystoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscope, bronchoscope, hysteroscopy are performed as some routine tests for cancer detection. These tests are carried out by inserting a tiny probe, which has a attached a camera. The probe is inserted inside the body. The doctor moves the probe in different directions. The camera shows images of the inside of your body on a screen similar to a television. Your doctor may also insert a tube to remove the material to be examined under a microscope. This test is called a biopsy.

It may be possible that during first few tests the patient will be asked not to not to drink or eat anything before couple of hours of test. Sometimes you need to drink a special liquid before analysis; this liquid helps to make the images clearer. Sometimes sedatives are also given before the examinations to help the person relax. Some analysis may also require providing an anesthetic so that no pain is felt by the patient.
