Cancer Surgery Now Saves More Life Than Ever BeforeBY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Cancer Surgery | Submitted: 2010-06-26 01:13:19
Surgery has long represented the only possible treatment of cancers, and it retains a place of choice. It integrates therapeutic and technical possibilities of treatment of cancer. From the study of various technical possibilities and collegial discussion will identify the best combination therapy adapted to each particular case. Cancer surgery has also been the first therapy to fight against cancer. Now cancer patients have options to discuss their disease with multidisciplinary surgeons like oncologists, radiotherapists to get the best treatment possible. The surgery is now often combined with other therapies such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone therapy. Generally, the surgery can eliminate cancer cells and stop their proliferation. It can occur immediately or after a treatment to reduce the extent of the tumor before extracting. The procedure must be accurately determined pre-operatively before final decision is taken on the procedure to be followed for cancer treatment. Procedure We must protect the organ which needs to be operated, that is to say that we must protect the rest of the body from contamination by cancer cells (to avoid cause of coetaneous metastasis at the incision). The surgeon then performs the complete resection of the tumor. Next, the surgeon will perform a dissection is to say he will remove the lymph nodes and vessels in the tumor area to prevent cancer form spreading to neighboring cells. To be sure that the neighboring cells are not affected by cancer, contaminated cancerous cells are taken as sample and immediately sent to pathology laboratory for immediate analysis under a microscope. If the boundaries of sample are not healthy, then it means that there are still cancer cells around the body. In such cases surgeon must continue the operation and extend the dissection and analysis. The last step is the closure of wall and skin so as to avoid contaminating them with cancer cells. Effects of surgery If we see the past records, the success of surgery in treatment of cancer has been increasingly bettered with advancement of technology. Even the rarest of rare patients having serious physical and psychological problems have recovered after surgery. Reconstructive surgery has made much progress and has taken an important place in the treatment of certain cancers (breast). Laparoscopic surgery is becoming more and more to reduce the length of hospitalization, postoperative complications, the size of scars that become very small. Monitoring by an oncologist is essential, in order to detect any reoccurrence. Results The results are very encouraging, thanks to major advances. Cancer surgery is nowadays less mutilating. Thanks to the therapies as like (hence the importance of multidisciplinary staff), radiation therapy and / or chemotherapy can make treatment of fresh tumors very easy. New surgical techniques have been developed and are increasingly well as mastered the spectrum that can treat liver metastases without much difficulty. Approximately 365,000 cancer patients are treated each year by surgery. The surgery not only removes localized tumor but also helps in establishing or confirm a diagnosis. Cancer surgery is now a major therapeutic option for cancer treatment. Quality criteria specific to this discipline have been defined under the authorization of health facilities in oncology. These days treatment of certain forms of cancer like breast, gastrointestinal cancers, urological, thoracic, gynecological, ENT and maxillo-facial has become almost certain by use of surgery. These days it takes just half an hour to operate a cancer patient, thanks to an innovative technique, whether a woman being operated on for breast cancer should also undergo an axillaries dissection. This great progress may save the patient an unnecessary act or returning for a second intervention. But this technique is still popular only in Europe. Currently, at the removal of the tumor, many teams remove a precaution chain node metastases that have spread.
