Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system. Like all cancers, treatment options for lymphoma are better when it is detected early. The treatment of lymphoma is decided based on several factors including the type and the extent of lymphoma, its growth rate and the overall health of the patient, including the status of his immune system. If the lymphoma is diagnosed at an early stage, it is possible to treat properly. Instead, follow the patient closely for any signs and symptoms of progression of lymphoma. It is very important to analyze all options for lymphoma treatment. Ask questions and understand your disease. Open communication with your health care team will help you make the best decision, not only for you but for your family also.

Biological treatments: Stem cell transplantation also called biological response modifier or immunotherapy uses the body's immune system to fight against cancer or reduce certain side effects of other cancer treatments. The biotherapy may help restore healthy cells damaged by cancer, so that healthy cells can control cancer, or inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. The interferon, interleukins and tumor necrosis factor are all related to the biologic and more agents may be used, alone or in combination with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Monoclonal Antibodies: Monoclonal antibodies are more often used, which may prove effective against the specific types of cancer. A healthy body normally produces antibodies to fight against infection. Thanks to medical research, we can now clone these antibodies in the laboratory and can schedule them to attack the cancer cells rather than microbes.

Bone marrow and stem cell: Sometimes, when the lymphoma is very advanced and not responding to treatment, then considers a bone marrow or liver transplant stem cell treatment methods are used. Transplants are classified into three basic categories of donor:

In the case of isograph, cells are taken from an identical twin. The allograft is a graft with donor stem cells was almost identical to the patient, as in the case of a close relative like brother or sister. It is rare that the type of stem cell corresponds to that of an unrelated person. In autologous stem cells, it is harvested from bone marrow or blood of the patient. When the NHL has spread to the blood or bone marrow, it can be difficult to obtain cells that have not been contaminated, even after laboratory processing to remove or kill cancer cells.

Bone marrow or stem cells are the introduced to fulfill healthy cells that have been destroyed by cancer treatment. Bone marrow or stem cells that have been taken from the donor are carefully frozen and stored while the patient receives high dose chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. This process kills all or most of the bone marrow and stem cells. The patient is deprived of defensive mechanism against infection and his body is unable to produce blood cells. After treatment, bone marrow or stem cells are reinfused into the body. During the recovery period, all body systems must be subject to close monitoring to detect rejection, infection or a need for supportive therapy. This treatment is very popular because it is very new, expensive and long. Call your regional center against cancer for more information.

The fear of a recurrence may begin during treatment and it persists for loner period. These fears are normal, they are manageable and they fade with time. Many forms of lymphoma can be processed and new innovative treatments prolong the remission. Once you have gathered all the medical facts, you can begin to formulate your own method of coping. Many people find comfort in surrounding herself with family and friends, reviving their values and trying different techniques of visualization and relaxation.
