Lung cancer remains a serious public health problem, causing the deaths each year. Although we know that smokers are at particular risk of developing this cancer, lung cancer can also affect non- smokers, particularly women. 15% of lung cancers among non-smokers. Even if the harm associated with smoking are now well known, it is nevertheless useful to recall how smoking has disastrous effects in terms of human lives and health costs. Every year 5 million people die prematurely from diseases related to smoking, whether it is heart disease, lung cancer. In the latter case, smoking is directly responsible for one third of all cancer cases and approximately 85% of mortality associated with lung cancer. This high mortality is due to the fact that lean more medical advances, lung cancer remains a disease extremely difficult to control, only 15% of people with advanced cancer remain alive 5 years after diagnosis. This resistance to treatment has enormous consequences, both in terms of quality of life of patients and the health system: the United States alone, the health costs related to treatment of people with lung cancer are currently at 5 billion per year! There is no doubt that the best weapon against lung cancer is prevention and that prevention is first and foremost by quitting smoking. Smokers who believe that the damage is already done and that stopping smoking will not improve their health, think again because it's never too late to do well. A smoker until the age of 75 years is at risk of suffering from lung cancer. If that person had stopped smoking at age 60, this risk would be 1 out of 10, to 50 years, 1 out of 17 to 40 years, 1 in 33 and 30 years, 1 in 60. These risks are still higher than for a non-smoking (1 in 250), but nevertheless represent a marked improvement! In other words, every person who quits smoking significantly reduces the risk of developing lung cancer, regardless of age when the product is quitting. Prevention for non-smokers Although people who have never smoked are much less likely to develop lung cancer. It is also intriguing to note that non-smokers seem more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers: one in five women suffering from lung cancer never smoked in his life compared to one in ten men. Lung cancer is so closely associated with smoking that we almost forget that there are additional ways to combat it, and as with many cancers, that prevention begins with food. Two major classes of food are particularly important in preventing lung cancer: Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli or Brussels sprouts are an important weapon in combating the development of lung cancer, especially among people who never smoked. These vegetables contain substances that accelerate the elimination of toxic, reducing the risk of causing damage to cells. For example, a recent study showed that non-smokers who eat cruciferous vegetables at least once a week have a marked decrease in the risk of lung cancer, 60% less than those who eat only once per month. Lignans are anti-cancer compounds found in many fruits and vegetables, nuts, rye and especially in flaxseed, which provides exceptional content. Studies have shown that people who have high levels of lignans in the blood are 50% lower risk of developing lung cancer, this protective effect is particularly important among non-smokers. Habits to adopt It is therefore possible to adopt lifestyles that reduce the risk of being affected by lung cancer. Include plenty of fruits and vegetables in the diet, particularly cruciferous vegetables like broccoli. Flax seeds are a unique source of lignans, which can prevent lung cancer, but they are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce heart disease. Adding a spoonful of freshly ground flaxseed to cereal in the morning is the easiest way to enjoy these benefits.
