What are the objectives of further investigations? Additional tests have two main functions, first it confirm the diagnosis of rectal cancer; and second it determine whether cancerous cells have spread to areas near the rectum, particularly in the pelvis or in more remote locations, such as lung or liver. What are the different complementary tests? Additional tests requested by the doctor depending on the type of record that the doctor wishes to achieve. When the doctor makes a diagnostic evaluation, the tests are a proctoscopy and biopsy with a pathological examination. Pathological examination is to examine under a microscope the tissue fragments collected at biopsy. This is not a cure: its aim is to observe whether the tissues in the rectum and other parts of the abdomen contain cancer cells. It provides detailed information on the type of cancer and its characteristics. Only histological examination can conclude definitively whether or not cancer is present in the body. When the doctor takes stock local, that is to say, when looking at whether the tumor was locally developed, additional examinations may be like DRE a proctoscopy, a transrectal ultrasound, a colonoscopy, barium enema, a scanner or commonly an MRI test. For more information, fact sheets on MRI and CT are available. To understand the MRI scanner; detailed information on transrectal ultrasound doctors compare the reports with fact sheets. The ultrasound, colonoscopy reports are also compared by doctors form fact sheets and final judgment is taken The X-ray of the rectum and a barium enema is also done at times. When the doctor makes a staging of cancer, that is to say that they are trying to find out if cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body, additional examinations may be an X-ray of the lung. Standardized test for rectal cancer is like liver ultrasound and CT scan of the abdomen, chest and pelvis. If the tumor has invaded other organs, a CT scan of the chest, lungs, abdomen and pelvis (associated with MRIs to the pelvis) can detect if nodes near the rectum are met; metastases in the liver and lung or potential breaches of the kidneys, ureter and bladder is there. The treatment of rectal cancer The treatment of rectal cancer includes effort to remove the tumor and remove all cancerous cells. Cancer treatments aims at healing the sick person if possible preserving anal sphincter in working condition; reducing the risk of recurrence; increase the life of the patient; improve the quality of life. The different treatment options of of rectal cancer There are different types of treatments that can be performed alone or combined for rectal cancer cure. The surgery can removes the tumor and any cancerous grafts, that is to say places that cancer cells could have reached during an operation. Radiation therapy is a treatment that involves using radiation to destroying the cancer cells located in the rectum or in some nodes. Surgery and radiotherapy are local treatments of cancer, that is to say, they act locally on the cancer cells located in the rectum or lymph. Chemotherapy is a treatment that involves the use of drugs against cancer cells (by injection into a vein in most cases). Chemotherapy affects all cancer cells, even those who have not been detected by imaging studies. Radiation and chemotherapy are often used in addition to surgery to improve the chances of recovery. They then called adjuvant treatments. If treatment is performed before surgery, it is called neo-adjuvant therapy. These treatments can also be used alone without surgery. In most cases treatment of rectal cancer with a combination of technologies like surgery, radiation therapy and finally chemotherapy has proves to be good even in the worst of cases.
