A Comparative Between Hodgkin Disease and Non Hodgkin's LymphomaBY: Ritu Choudhary | Category: Lymphoma Cancer | Submitted: 2010-07-08 19:42:33
Lymphomas are cancers of the lymphatic system, which participates in the defense reactions of the organism. They fall into two major types, Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Hodgkin's disease : Hodgkin's disease particularly affects young adults between 20 and 40 years and is rare before the age of 10 years. The disease is found before one or several large lymph nodes, either under the deep skin or near the heart or in the abdomen. This will involve either a chest radiograph, an abdominal ultrasound to see these large lymph nodes. Sometimes the disease begins with general symptoms common to many diseases, like fever without infection, sweating, especially at night and weight loss. For diagnosis, a sample of a lymph node (biopsy) is necessary. Microscopic examination of the sample will show the presence of sternberg cells characteristic of the disease. A full clinical examination and complementary examinations, radiographs, blood tests, and bone marrow biopsy, are then required to determine the exact intensity of the disease. Depending on the number of affected lymph nodes, the potential harm of viscera, the disease is classified into four stages, which decides the choice of treatment. This combines treatment of lymphoma cancer by chemotherapy and radiotherapy according to stage of disease. The prognosis is generally good, with a prolonged remission achieved in 95% for localized, 70% for more extensive forms. Non-Hodgkin's disease: Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are cancers developed from other cells of the lymphatic system. They are so common that with just over 10,000 new cases per year are detected. The circumstances of discovery are more varied than in Hodgkin's disease and depend on the location of the infringement. It may be a fever, fatigue, the palpation of a large ganglion, superficial signs of pain or effected organ. Again, it must microscopic examination like a biopsy and staging to classify the disease into four stages. Treatment and prognosis depend largely on the precise nature of the lymphoma, the degree of extension of disease and patient age. The disease is considered more serious after age of 60 years. The most common treatment of lymphoma cancer is chemotherapy. Treatment of cancer by chemotherapy may be either by use of oral tablets or intravenously for the most aggressive cases of cancer. Treatments with specific antibodies are also available. The various therapeutic methods are sometimes combined to give a quick and stable relief to the patient. The non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of malignancy (cancer), which affects cells involved in the immune system and are located mostly in the lymph nodes. The non-Hodgkin's lymphoma does not denote a single disease but a collection of many types of lymphoma, resulting in application of different clinical forms for prognosis and treatment. The classification of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma comprise of more than 20 different types of cancer. A patient suffering form lymphoma cancer can survive even when severely affected with the disease for as long as 5 to 6 years. Such patients generally do not talk much about their illness but family members should do their best to understand the trouble. Severly affected cases may required numerous chemo in short dosages of within one month time period. If case cannot be solved with oral chemo, then doctors may decide to do intravenous chemo or a possible bone marrow transplant. Sometimes the disease may also play games, seeing wrong signs, doctors may decide to stop the chemo and a possible transplant, ending up to see a worse condition of patients. Lymphoma cancer could also be hereditary, hence immediate family members of the patient are advised to take all possible precautions. Lymphoma cancer is dangerous only if not detected in the early stage of cancer. Article Source: http://www.cancer-surgery.com/ About Author / Additional Info: I am not a cancer doctor.
